With the Christmas holiday season upon us, ice skaters have become part of the scenery in downtown Lexington, as those in the spirit strap on their skates and glide across the ice in Triangle Park. One University of Kentucky freshman has taken her skating skills to the next level, recently securing the senior ladies title at the annual U.S. Figure Skating Collegiate Championships.

Farah Sheikh took home a prize of $5,000 when she won the gold medal at the national competition held in Green Bay, Wis., in August. Sheikh has been skating since the age of 3 and has never looked back, previously acquiring two state championship titles in Michigan before her arrival on the collegiate scene. Sheikh says this win helps to put her over the top.
